Honestly I have no words. God has totally impressed me, as always! A wonderful friend of mine recently came for a visit and brought me copies of my book so I could approve them for print. When I had it in my hands for the first time it did not feel real, I seemed to have no idea where it came from even though I knew hours and hours of work went into it. That is when you know God has had His hand in the project from beginning to end. Having it in my hands feels like a gift straight from Him and I'm still amazed that it actually happened. This book is 100% His, He receives the credit for it, because without Him, this story wouldn't even exist in the first place.
Here are some “God stories” from the process of writing this book:
I wrote the first draft of this book while I was on my midwife school in India (early 2018) and God told me; “Put it away for now, it isn’t time yet”. While I was in Guatemala helping to lead an outreach (early 2020) I heard Him say “Remember that book? It is time to pull it out and get it published.” To which I said “haha that’s a funny joke” and He said “I’m serious”. I knew then that if this was going to happen it was going to be all Him.
By August 2020 I had found a publisher that agreed to publish the book (the first publisher I went to) and shortly after I met my illustrator:
Massive credit goes to my extremely talented illustrator Nancy Kline who made the story come to life and was such a joy to work with! Meeting her was totally a “God appointment”. I was helping my brother move to California and I had just decided to use one of the publisher’s illustrators (none of which I liked) when my grandma called me up and told me that I had a cousin in California I should meet. I didn’t even know she existed until then, so I made time to go see this cousin of mine and when I walked into her house I saw the most beautiful artwork. It was the exact style I had been wanting for the book so I asked her who did the paintings and she said she did. By the end of my time there I asked her if she would consider illustrating my children’s book and the rest is now history. Nancy Kline is an absolute treasure (not to mention family!) and I felt so honored and blessed that she shared her beautiful gift with me for this book. I would send her a sad outline sketch of what I was thinking for each page and usually by the next day (or same day) I would receive a message on facebook saying “how is this?” and I would just sit there stunned that she turned my sad sketch into a beautiful painting over night! Many of the images are copies of real photos I gave her from my travels that she recreated so perfectly. I enjoyed every minute of the hours of facetime we spent going over every single image again and again and reading and editing the book what must have been 100 times haha
Another “God meeting” happened when I asked on face book if there was anyone who knew how to use photoshop that would be willing to facetime and teach me how to use it. The person who responded first was a brief acquaintance I had made in Guatemala the year before. We were able to face time shortly after that and he spent a good couple hours patiently going over all the little tools and explaining things sometimes 3 or 4 times. After another face time call or two to him I was able to confidently cut out and play around with all the lovely images I had to work with. When I told him that I couldn’t thank him enough he said; “I remember last year when your team was here I asked you to teach me how to take blood pressures and you sat with me and taught me. I remember thinking that I wanted to return the favor one day and well, now I have”.
I also want to say thank you to all the friends and family who read over the book in its early stages and helped me trim things away and add things and who were there to encourage me.
Thank you to all of YOU for praying for this! God ANSWERED! This story is as much yours as it is mine, because you have been walking this journey with me through all your faithful prayers over years and God has been answering them. I pray it blesses each of you the way you have blessed me.
